United Nations of Toastmasters Winter Carnival 2012

Wish you were here…

On my question where you would be able to meet so many representatives of different nations and nationalities in Kyiv on Saturday evening, February 11, 2012, you could hardly have any idea. Anyway, when I opened the door of Boom Boom Room Club, it seemed as if I jumped from the cold frosty evening into the warm and friendly atmosphere of the World Youth Festival.
Winter Carnival has become traditional in Kyiv Toastmasters community. But the fabulous event of 2012 was developed by the team of officers under the guidance of the Area Governor Kateryna Zarubina. Toastmasters clubs supported this idea and despite the time limit for thorough preparation each club presented various nations. Bright national clothes of Scotland and India, Ukraine and Estonia, Greece and Germany, the USA and France, Georgia and Japan created the spirit of true friendship. Each participant had a unique chance to “smell the air” of the whole globe where people are different, where languages are different as well as customs, traditions and festivals of each country. But there was something special that united Toastmasters. And this “special” was great desire to move forward and enrich one’s inner world. Masters of this ceremony were Olena Noskova and Mikhaylo Galimurza who played jokes inspiring the audience.
I’m not going to describe in details the whole event. But I should confess that three hours and a half had flown in a moment. We applauded Santa Clause from Japan (Victor Fursov), who never missed the opportunity to polish his public speaking skills. There was burst of laugh during the competition, conducted by Tetyana Kiselyova (Top Talkers) and volunteers from different clubs. It appeared to be not an easy task to move paper ships with the help of fans, and only the men with quick hands coped with this unusual task.
I looked with excitement at Dmytro Kuziak (Chamber Toastmasters Club). Recently he won the second place at the Inner Club Speech Contest, and at the carnival he performed the role of a very hospitable Georgian guy, speaking English with the brilliant Georgian accent. I’m not sure that Dmytro was strong enough in cooking but his “hachapuri” were super delicious.
It was not a secret that members of Toastmasters community could perform any role. They showed their talents during the competition in fashion design, and in 20 minutes two teams of “designers” demonstrated their T-shirts “art masterpieces”. Two top-models on the podium – Jenia Poluektova and Victor Polyakov were so natural and self-confident that it was impossible to choose the best one among them.
A “new concept” in French fashion design was shown by members of EBA Toastmasters Club (Svitlana Nesterenko, Oksana Tykha and Anna Naleskina). At first, girls encouraged volunteers ladies to put some staff of clothes on their men-models, and then put it off. It was very exciting, I should say.
During the winter carnival I discovered something extraordinary and new for myself, in particular:
Svitlana Stavska (Dnipro Hills) was not only a great public speaker but also a jazz singer;
Petro Zaliznyak flew from Italy to Kyiv in order not to miss the event and he shared his idea of establishing Toastmasters club at the University where he had been studying at the moment;
– Art-Talkers members (Elena Toktarova, Jasson Cammarano and Marina Nikolaeva) performed classical “Dance of little swans” in a humorous manner and showed a typical example of the Estonian tardiness;
Liliya Mochalova’s singing (Dnipro Hills) was so inspiring and enthusiastic that the girls from other clubs ran to the stage and began to dance like the so-called “sexy back up”;
– tender and cute Area Governor Kateryna Zarubina gave a professional master-class in dancing, and no one could stop representatives of “united nations” who had been dancing “Sirtaki” for 15 minutes and finished it being wet to the skin;
– there was a lot of laugh during the competition when guys tried to throw apples into the packages and girls helped them;
– it was not an easy task to name the winner of the competition who had been pronouncing correctly the word “Belissimo” with 7 or even 8 candies in his/her mouth;
– the audience welcomed four brave guys from Top Talkers (Oleh Pokidko, Oleksandr Kosenko, Igor Chernikov and Oleksandr Andrienko) who performed the song “Bandito, Gangsterito”
The final accord was made by Toast Crackers members, who delivered a special ceremony of invitation to Toastmasters. The Club represented India and prepared the lively and vivid picture of an Indian village with its old traditions. The costumes were superb, the performance and the songs were very natural, well prepared and well practiced. That’s why the audience applauded four brilliant actors – Timur Berezhnoy, Kristina Bilous, Sergiy Grebenyuk, and Yuriy Stetsenko.
…Time passed very quickly. Those who participated in the traditional Winter Carnival left Boom Boom Room in a high spirit. So did I.

Meet Cyprus Toastmasters

Having spent my vacation in Cyprus I had a meeting with The President of Limassol Toastmasters Club Peter Sheldrake and his wife Irmi. They are absolutely pleasant and charming couple! Being not so young as the most of Ukrainian Toastmasters, they are still very enthusiastic and devoted to the TM community.

Meeting Cyprus Toastmasters

They told me some very useful details about TM community in Cyprus.

First of all, it is about membership. Cyprus is the country where many people come there for short periods of time – mainly due to their business matters. For that reason the level of expatriates in the TM clubs in Cyprus is extremely high. Usually they have a huge number of guests every meeting. Sometimes the number of meeting participants exceeds 45!

Another interesting detail is the meeting place. Limassol TM club conducts meetings in the exquisite luxury atmosphere of five-star hotel and offers tasty multi-course dinner for every participant!

Mr. Sheldrake kindly provided me with a meeting agenda of the Limassol TM Club. The useful point to take for us is a description of every speaker’s task. All participants of the meeting have possibility to evaluate any speaker with a respect to current project objectives.

Mr. Sheldrake invited all Ukrainian Toastmasters to Cyprus.  He assured me that they will be most welcomed to participate in Limassol TM Club meetings. Also Mr. And Mrs. Sheldrake were interested in the TM-related life in Ukraine and said that they will consider their possible trip to our country. I hope that they will visit Ukraine and participate in our clubs meetings.

Mr. and Mrs. Sheldrake, we’re looking forward for visiting us!

Enjoy the video below where Peter invites us to visit Cyprus.

Confessions from the past Area Governor

Dear Friends,
This year I had a wonderful chance – to be an Area Governor of Toastmasters Ukraine. This role have opened me a door to another world – the world where you dream and make the dreams come true with a help of number of beautiful people, whom sometimes you even do not know in person; the world where you come across difficult situations and always manage to find a solution if you want to; the world where you grow and make yourself deeper and stronger from day to day. I have been with Toastmasters for almost 4 years and this community really change me a lot, not to say completely!
I believe that this year with a help of all clubs and area team we have built a good ground for next years of successful development of Toastmasters in Ukraine.

Let me mention just a few of our joint achievements:

Odessa, I’m proud of YOU ALL!

The only day in Odessa – 25 June 2011 – was remarkable for a basket of fruitful moments. Each single moment was a delicious toping for another one. Surprisingly, at the end it turned out to be the tastiest desert of the day.

Our morning started at 5 am. Early, isn’t it?  How do you think what was the first place to visit for early bird travelers? Right, McDonalds.  We approached it, waiting for the door to be opened at 5:30 am. More and more people were coming and pulling a closed door. In 10 min there was a pretty big crowd. It reminded me at once the opening of any new Apple store, when fans gather a day in advance.

7th Annual All Ukrainian Speech Contest

by Alex Sheremet

16 April 2011, Klovsky Lyceum — It was the All Ukrainian speech contest, the biggest event in the community of Toastmasters Ukraine.

More than 140 people have attended the event and witnessed 13 articulate and very creative speeches delivered by representatives of 7 Toastmasters Clubs.
The winners of the contest were:
First place – Evgenia Poluektova, with speech titled “Too much information”, Chamber Toastmasters Club, Kyiv
Second place – Ilona Postemskaya with speech titled “The biggest evil”, Chamber Toastmasters Club, Kyiv
Third place – Zoya Gulko, with speech titled “This is Her Future”. Toastcraskers Toastmasters Club, Kyiv

The wining speech described a life of a modern intellectual worker, who gradually gets overwhelmed with all the events and messages from the surrounding world. Its message was to limit the information flow, and only pay attention to things that matter the most.

The topics were diverse and interesting, the speakers delivered thought provoking points of view. There was a place for various emotions, seriousness, horror, and loud laughter.

A panel of 8 judges from different clubs evaluated contestants. The speakers were acknowledged to be the top performers in their clubs during local speech contests. Criteria used in judging included speech content, organization, voice quality and body language.

Both participants and spectators enjoyed the event. We want to thank the organizers and sponsors, which are

Mykola Latansky – prominent Toastmaster and life-long sponsor of Toastmasters in Ukraine

7th Annual All-Ukrainian Toastmasters Speech Contest. This one is my 2nd in fact. It worth participating, fellows, either you win or lose. The contest was enriched with a lot of new experiences and emotions.

And now I’m waiting for choosing the order of my performance. Where is my bang? All the balls are pulled out from the basket and the only left was the 5th one. It seemed a pretty good destiny “choice”.

I was sitting next to other contestants listening to one speech changing another. At that very moment it was a great desire to scream out how very muchlike salsa in addition to tango. The only speech I’d like to perform then is to dance and to let my body speak. However, suddenly my mind caught the vivid reasons why work can be the biggest evil in my life. In essence, I reflected on my willingness to be at least self-employed and work for the idea I believe in. Meanwhile, my stomach started giving the sings that it wouldn’t mind to take some tasty lasagna. Thus, I had to come it down and rebuke mildly: “Even now it’s all about food for you!”

At last my time stroke to perform “25. Watch out!”. So many times rehearsed, so many times revised and remade, so many efforts – and the resistance feeling of what I had and what I’ve got now was telling me I’ve wasted a lot of my non-renewable resource. Now my tricky consciousness woke up and asked: “Do you want to be a star?” I realized that in fact I didn’t want to be a star. I wanted to go to LAS VEGAS!!! Now I do as well. Very much. And here I remembered Lyubomyr telling us about Michael Jordan: “It doesn’t matter how many winning shuts you missed. Without them it would be impossible to play so many victorious games.” I started to save my money in the honeypot J It was useless to stack my head with too much information that all efforts were pointless. This is not her, his or their future. This is my future I want to live as if tomorrow would never come.

One day in September my friend’s friend will ask me in FB: “What’s up, girl? How was your LAS VEGAS? ;)

This is my future. It is fantabulous either I win or lose. And what is yours?

8th of March, Ladies and spring

We would be singing you songs every day, but that would make the singing casual.

Ladies, today, on your day, we’re happy to make this day anyhow special and bring a few minutes of pleasure:

Notes on Summer-in-the-Winter Carnival

by Bohdan Trotsenko, Dniprohills TM club.

Toastmaster’s event is a rare thing. As such, it is always very wanted and very anticipated. I couldn’t help thinking about it before; afterwards I needed a calm event-less rest for the whole Sunday, as the vivid memories still played and kept brining pleasure.
It’s a rare case when I’m lucid, fully conscious yet unaware of time. That was the case.
If I were to believe that high concentration of positive people creates a kind of Reality Distortion Field, that would be the case too.
If I had a choice, I would go for not knowing about the Carnival rather than missing it. Summer could not taste better than in a small portion in the middle of the winter.
Ok, ok, I know I sound like evangelist. To put it in simple English, I hugely enjoyed it.
So, how it was:
18:30 Lily opened the Carnival and passed control to Lena Koronenko — the toastmaster of the event.
At first, we played a get-to-know-each-other game, in teams. There were 4 teams altogether: Hearts, Stars, Pinks and Blacks, distinguished by the sign on a paper summer hat (by the way, the nice hats were kindly prepared by Yuliya Barchukova). The goal of the game was to prepare & present a fictional summer story — and the entire team should take part in performance.
The stories were of different crazy kinds, I much enjoyed each one, but now I do not remember enough details to let you taste.
Then, a short brake, if only I can name it a brake, as chin-wagging and having fun didn’t stop for a second.
Then, a short performace, “If I were not upon the stage“, kindly prepared by Lily Nabochenko, Milla NezlinaKatrusya Zarubina, me (Bohdan Trotsenko), Yuliya Barchukova and Jenia Poluektova.
Then Svitlana Stavska sang “It must have been love” (“… but it’s over now“) accompanied by Yuriy Karabach playing guitar.
Then we sang “Маленький table topics evaluator” (“… с competent leadership manual‘ом”) — a fictional song by Yuriy, followed by Boney M.’s “Sunny“.
Then, Yustyna performed a beautiful belly dance.
Then we had a salsa master classed led by Katrusya Zarubina and Gabriel (wonderfully done, guys!)
And then — disco! In between we played a few games, prepared by Nataliia Baliuk and Iryna Taratun.
Around 22:00 Lena passed control back to Lily and thus the party was over :(

But! Apart from what I’ve seen and experienced, there were a huge amount of preparation done “behind the curtains”. Huge thanks to those who helped to make it happen.

P.S. I’ve found another blogpost by Yustina (Lviv’s Lember TM club) which you may enjoy too.

P.S.S. See the photos from the party.
